German composer Johannes FRITSCH dies

HILVERSUM - Last Thursday - 29 April - German composer, writer and composition professor Johannes FRITSCH (1941-2010) died.

In the early 60's Fritsch studied at the Hochschule für Musik Köln (amongst others with Bernd Alois Zimmermann). Between 1964 and 1970 he was a violist in the Stockhausen-Ensemble and in this period he also worked at the famous Elektronische Studio of the Westdeutsche Rundfunk (WDR).

By teaching at the Darmstädter Akademie für Tonkunst and the Internationalen Ferienkursen in Darmstadt and - from 1974 to 1998 - being a member of the board of the Institut für Musik und Musikerziehung Darmstadt Fritsch grew into a pivotal figure in the German new music scene. In 1984 he joined the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne as a professor for composition.
Moreover, together with fellow composers Rolf Gehlhaar en David Johnson, Fritsch founded in 1971 Feedback-Studio-Verlag, the first German composers' publishing firm.

His compositional oeuvre exhibits postmodernism (synthesis of different styles) since the late 60's. It comprises - apart from theater works, orchestral and chamber music - a large quantity of electronic compositions.
